Type Locality and Naming

Along the village of Gava, N. Fergana. A. A. Abdusamatov, 1988, 1995. Stratotype 0.5 km north of the village of Gava.

Synonym: Gavasay Formation, Gavasay Suite, Гавасайская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Consists of two parts: lower part - sandstones, sands, gravelites, cemented by carbonate cement. Upper - greenish-gray, dark-gray, thin-bedded clays. Thickness up to 22m.


Lithology Pattern: 
Clayey sandstone


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Lies with erosion on the Nichkesay Fm

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the Opichek Fm

Regional extent

Northern Fergana. Correlated: lower part with the Bukhara Fm; upper - with the lower part of the Givar Fm. South-West of Gissar, Kaplanbek Fm and lower part of the Kainarbulak Fm of the Prishchastkent region.

Fossils

In the lower part, marine bivalve mollusks were found - Ostrea bellovacina Lam., O. sella Leym., Cucullaea Crassatina Lam., Venericardia pectuncularis Lam., Panope rimiensis Meell.; in the upper part - marine bivalve mollusks - Modiolus elegans Sow., Corbula (Cuneocorbula) angulata (?) Lam., Meretrix ovalina Desh.; foraminifers Nonion sublaevis Tendam., Anomalina seccedens Brotz., Caucasina suzakensis N.Byk.

Belongs to the Thanetian Stage of the Upper Paleocene.
